Let's celebrate the next time we fart !!!

My colleague (from work) and I were talking about festivals (on Sankranthi) when all of a sudden, a question struck my mind. Why the fuck do we celebrate the New Year (I mean, Jan 1st)? It's just stupid!!! Do we celebrate a day's beginning? or a month's beginning? Then why the hell do we celebrate an year's beginning? It's just a new year. Come to think of it, it has no significance at all. It makes more sense to celebrate 1st of April (New Financial Year) or June 15th or 16th (New Academic Year). At least there's some significance attached to those days. After pondering over it for a few minutes, the only possible rational explanation that I got (with a little help from Rakesh) was that it's a kind of an end (and subsequently, a beginning) of a considerable time. Is that really a valid reason to celebrate about??!! Common on ... it's even more meaningful to celebrate the day that comes once in four years (29th of Feb) or the end of a century or a millennium. It's the stuff like this which makes me think - How can people be so stupid? I've got an idea. Why don't we celebrate the next time we fart or whenever we encounter a dead rat!!! It's stuff like this which takes out the meaning and purpose of a celebration.

  1. I don't think New Year's day has any significance in itself, it is a chance to leave behind us, the old and welcome the new. And since there are no such day for Westerners (Indians have many), New Year's day is celebrated in grand style.

And why should we celebrate every year of our lives (like our birthdays)? Why not every month or day?

I think it is because that day in the year is "ours" and we are treated specially on that day :)

  2. Hello Mr. Anonymous, ("... Why not every month or day?") that's exactly my point. And just to be clear, I don't understand why people celebrate birthdays either. But, it's not that stupid when compared to celebrating new year.

  4. I dont understand why r so frustrated abt such a small thing...days liek new yrs r just occasions to get together and celebrate...ppl (busy or not) always look for a chance or reason to get together and celebrate...just think this as one of those occasions...if u ask why just this day and not the time we fart...we'll when it started it, they might have a reason as beginnig of a new era(significant period of time...frnds def:P)...and then, ppl want to celebrate it together, it wud have spread easily, b'coz if each of them celebrates on their own time, then it wudn't be possible for everyone to get-together...my point in breif being - ppl look reason for having fun together and try to see tht everyone or as many possible meet, which is possible on occasions which r celebrated overall...

  5. @pOtti : abey ooo ... I know that people need a REASON to celebrate (in this case, to mark a significant period). First of all, I don't think one year is significant. Feb-29th ... that's significant. O.K. For the time being, forget why we celebrate the 'damn-day'. Why don't we celebrate 29th of Feb. Is it not significant???? It comes after four fucking years. If people are so desperately looking for a chance or a reason to celebrate, Why not Feb 29th? That's my whole point. Lately, I'm totally confused - Am I crazy or the people!!!

P.S: For the record, I'm not frustrated. A little bored probably, but definitely not frustrated.

  6. well...ur blog sounded more like u r frustrated then u r bored:P
anyway, u r saying why not feb 29th...b'coz it comes after a really long time(4 yrs). ppl dont wait tht long to celebrate something...new yr, it comes every yr:D
the only significance of feb 29th being tht it occurs only once every 4 yrs...i m not going into the whole reason kind of thing(moon roatation, some seconds left every day blah blah)
but new yr, everyone feel tht a 'yr' of their life has passed away (with sucess or failures), but still it is still a unit in our life-span
my point being...i cant say who started it but, everyone celebrates on tht day...no since ppl want to celebrate it with everyone, they do it...u rarely see any one celebrating feb-29...now if u ask why no one did...i think it might be the 4 yrs reason...and why they started new yr..we'll i already ventured my guess in the prev post...
    wht say???

  9. Boss...It does have a reason....This was one way christians tried to impose christianity on others.....every single day of our life....whenever we look at the calendar we come to know the number of days since jesus christ died....unconsiously.

I just think the New Year celebrations on Jan 1st makes the tedious days calculation simpler by reminding ourself the number of years rather than the number of days !!!!! :P

  10. again...why do u want to celebrate feb 29th...how is it significant enuf to celebrate???
as i said, new yr denotes an end of a period of time(a unit or whtever, i cant remember the term) in our life or the start of a new one...wht does feb 29th denote...other than the count of the missing seconds in moon rotation...it doesn't denote the start or end of anything(i think, correct me if i m wrong)...
again, i m not saying tht we shud celebrate something which only denotes the start or end of something...tht was just to compare it to new yr...i want to know ur reason to celebrate feb 29

  12. to add to the previous comment, in our telugu calender, we too come across what is called as an 'adhika maasam'. At that time, special pujas are done (I don't know why specifically) ... Since, it's something out of the odd, and it comes after a 'significant' time, i feel that it's worth celebrating.

  13. well...something which comes in 4 yrs in not a good enuf reason to "celebrate"...atleast for me...i do accept it is something odd or something which occurs after a long time, but it isn't enuf to celebrate...and abt 'adhika maasam', i donno its details exactly but i dont think it just extra days...will find out and tell;)
